NABJ and NAHJ are working together to plan a collaborative and dynamic convention.#NABJNAHJ16 is shaping up to be robust and will be an epic event that members should not miss.
Our joint meeting will be the largest gathering of journalists this year. In addition to the staple NABJ events you expect at our conventions -- first-class networking, the job fair, workshops and plenary speakers -- we've established some new traditions this year, such as the "Innovation Bubble" and the "Look Your Best Pavilion." Moreover, Healthy NABJ is coming back with a strong presence on the exhibition floor. Partake in the nearly 100 workshops and take your journalism and media-related skills to the next level. The NABJ-DC chapter and the NABJ and NAHJ Boards are looking forward to welcoming you to Washington, D.C., from Aug. 3-7. To get you ready, here are 10 Things to Know about #NABJNAHJ16.
1) Pre-register by June 1 to save
on registration costs. You receive access to convention workshops, plenaries, career fair, professional breakfasts and receptions. You will need a registration badge to access all areas of the convention so be sure to wear your badge at all times. Most events at this year's convention are all under one roof at the Marriott Wardman Park so we anticipate a convention flow with ease and a family reunion-like atmosphere. Register here
2) Plan to be ready to hit the convention floor on Wednesday when full programming begins.Plan to arrive Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning to take advantage of a full day of programming and the Career Fair, which will open its doors at 1 p.m. You may check-in and pick up your registration at the convention starting on Tuesday, Aug. 2.
3) Hotel space is limited
, so book your room today. There are still some rooms available at the Marriott Wardman Park from Thursday to Sunday. NABJ and NAHJ have arranged for overflow rooms at the Omni Shoreham Hotel next door. Information on both hotels can be found here
4) New this year is the "Look Your Best Pavilion," a showcase within the career fair. Image and wardrobe consultants, hair dressers, makeup artists, photographers, and hair and beauty vendors will be stationed together to assist you in a newly designated area of the job pavilion. Take advantage of the professionals we've assembled and get the feedback you need to look your best.
5) The career fair
has attracted dozens of media companies and institutions. The career fair opens on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and closes on Friday at 5 p.m. Please note, there are hours on Wednesday this year instead of Saturday. If you're looking for a job, upload your resume in advance so employers can see it, here
6) Also new this year is the "Innovation Bubble." This staging area inside the convention hall will feature a newly defined area where you can handle the latest digital equipment, hear from journalists about their groundbreaking work, get an overview of the top social media tips you need to know and receive hands-on tutorials on the latest tools and technology. A schedule will be posted inside the pavilion so that you may maximize your time and stop by to receive on-the-spot training and engagement in the digital space.
7) Witness the 2016 NABJ Special Honors Award recipients
and Hall of Fame inductees receive praise. All of our founders will become newly minted members of the NABJ Hall of Fame and we will honor the next Ida B. Wells winner at the Aug. 5 luncheon. Other Hall of Fame honorees include: Stuart Scott, Dori Maynard and Gerald Fraser among others. NABJ will recognize the best in black journalism at the Salute to Excellence Awards on Saturday night. Join us as we pay homage to the lifetime achievements of Dale Wright, the groundbreaking work of Lester Holt, and the journalistic excellence of the STE media award winners.
