DeWayne Wickham, a NABJ founder and former president (1987 – 1989), began his journalism career in 1973, during the Watergate scandal that forced the resignation of President Nixon. In nearly four decades as a journalist, Mr. Wickham has worked for US News & World Report, The Baltimore Sun, WBAL-TV, CBS News, BET, and USA Today, where he has written a syndicated column since 1985.  He is currently the Dean of the School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD.

Specific Application Requirements:

  • Must be a high school senior who plans to attend an accredited four-year college or university and major in journalism or a communications-related discipline
  • G.P.A. requirement: 2.5 - 3.0
  • Essay topic:  "As a high school senior, what was or is your biggest challenge to pursuing your career goal of being a journalist? How has this challenge motivated you to work harder to succeed?" (800 - 1,000 words)
  • Demonstrate financial need and community involvement
